On the 10th of March this year the Wallace House Quilters “A Life in Patches” exhibition bunked out of the Noosa Regional Gallery.
It was a Tuesday, the day of the week we quilt together, fifty five of us. The exhibition girls were to pick up their portraits and their quilts from The House. And, I had imagined, revel loudly in their cleverness, their success. The exhibition opening on the 31stJanuary was the largest by far the Noosa Gallery had ever experienced, with more than 250 guests on that joyful night and record numbers attending over the next 5 weeks. The gallery director so buoyed, he was already planning next year’s ‘social history’ exhibition with another community group. We, the Wallace House Quilters, were inspirers, trail blazers. There was so much to celebrate.
But on that day, the house did not roar with chatter. On that day we were less than ten members, eyes wide in disbelief, hearts heavy with what might come, those not in attendance already hunkering down, paying attention to their grown up children to ‘stay at home mum’. I took the portraits and quilts home for safe keeping, feeling lucky as lucky that we’d snuck in our big adventure before the world went mad.
You know what happened next. We stayed home and baked and gardened and read and spring cleaned. And yes we worried and cried and some of us even drank too much. And we sewed and sewed and sewed. This is the Wallace House Quilters virtual exhibition about surviving a pandemic in the company of stitching. It is full of colour, and joy, and life.

From Maree: I began making this quilt about ten years ago but found that it was a huge over-commitment for me at the time. Fortunately, the project resurfaced and with time to spare this year, I started work!! I just love this quilt. It is probably one of my favourites. The Quilting Fairy, Fiona Bell, did a wonderful job with her custom quilting.
